Dr. Eve Van Cauter

University of Chicago

Professor, Department of Medicine,
Section of Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism
Committees on Molecular Metabolism and of Clinical and Translational Science
Board Chair, Sleep Number Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Van Cauter is an internationally known investigator in circadian rhythms on the endocrine system in normal and pathological conditions. She is also an expert in the mathematical and statistical analysis of the temporal patterns of hormonal secretion and the effects of sleep on endocrine function. Dr. Van Cauter is the Principal Investigator of a Program Project which is focused on the age-related changes in circadian rhythms.

Dr. Judith Owens

Harvard University

Professor, Department of Medicine & Neurology
Director, Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders, Boston Children’s Hospital
Editor in Chief, Behavioral Sleep Medicine

Dr. Owens is one of the world’s leading authorities on connections between sleep and behavior in children and adolescents. Her work in the field of school start times has changed policies in school districts around the country. Dr. Owens and her colleagues designed the first and now most widely used sleep habits questionnaire for children, which has been translated into over a dozen languages and has been used in over 200 research projects worldwide.

Dr. Virend Somers

Mayo Clinic

Alice Sheets Marriott Professor
Consultant, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine
Director, Cardiovascular Facility and Sleep Facility in the Center for Clinical and Translational Science

Dr. Somers’ research focuses on the role of the autonomic nervous system in cardiovascular regulation in humans, with an emphasis on normal and disordered sleep, and their relationship to cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and sudden death. His team is also involved in studies of vascular and adipocyte biology in humans, examining how changes in neural and metabolic mechanisms induced by disrupted sleep may influence the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. Dr. Somers’ research program is supported by the NIH, the AHA and the Mayo Foundation.

DR. DANIEL J. BUYSSE

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

UPMC Professor of Sleep Medicine
Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical and Translational Science

Dr. Buysse’s research focuses on the assessment, pathophysiology, and treatment of insomnia; the interactions between sleep and circadian rhythms; behavioral interventions for sleep; and the impact of sleep on health. Dr. Buysse has received research funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS). He is Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on 15 active federally-funded research projects (NIH, PCORI), and over 50 previously-funded research project grants. He has chaired and served on multiple study sections and advisory committees at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Buysse has published over 390 peer-reviewed articles and over 100 book chapters or review articles. He is past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and is currently a member of the Sleep Research Society Board of Directors. Dr. Buysse is a recipient of the Nathaniel Kleitman Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Mary A. Carskadon Outstanding Educator Award from the Sleep Research Society, and the Peter Hauri Career Distinguished Achievement Award from the Society of Behavioral Medicine.
